Calf Implants

Have you ever looked in the mirror and lamented that your calves are much smaller in proportion to your upper legs or to the rest of your body? Perhaps you’ve worked out to try to enlarge the muscle, but to no avail. This is common—it is often difficult to develop and define the calf muscle. Or perhaps, as a result of illness or surgery, the calf muscle in one leg is substantially different in shape or size than the muscle in the other, creating a distasteful asymmetry. Calf lift can equalize and balance out your appearance, giving you better-proportioned legs. The surgery utilizes calf implants, which are made of silicone and come in an assortment of shapes and sizes.

Is This Procedure for You?
Calf lift can be suitable for anybody. If you are generally healthy and happy with the rest of your body but are discontent with the size or contour of your calves, this permanent procedure can give you the results that you want.

Initial Consultation
You and Dr. Moore will discuss expectations and goals, taking into consideration your overall body size and shape, as well as your natural calf size. Because calf implants come in various sizes and shapes, Dr. Moore will help you decide what will work best for your body type and goals. You will also discuss your medical history and any allergies, medication or conditions you may have.

What to Expect
Pre-Operative
Do not eat or drink after midnight on the evening before surgery (unless directed to take medications by your Patient Coordinator). Please shower the morning of your procedure, but do not apply deodorant, creams, lotions, powders or oil to your skin. Please do not wear jewelry or makeup, and do not bring valuables with you to surgery.

Surgery will be performed at a hospital or outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia. The surgery typically lasts one or two hours. An adult should escort you on the day of surgery and remain with you at home for the first 24 hours.

Day of Surgery
During the procedure, generally one or two silicone implants will be inserted into an incision made behind the knee. The incision will then be closed up with stitches.

Post-Operative
After the surgery, it is recommended that you rest and stay off your feet as much as possible for the first few days to allow maximum healing. Keep your calves elevated for the first week after the operation. Although the situation will vary with each patient, generally you may be able to shower after two days and resume your normal activity after about a week or so, including returning to work. You will feel some discomfort after you resume walking; don’t be alarmed if it takes several weeks before you are able to walk easily.

Be prepared to experience some degree of pain, swelling and bruising for several weeks, although the pain can be controlled by medication. You may also experience weakness when on your feet and may fatigue easily, so move about accordingly. Dr. Moore will be able to give you more detailed instructions and suggestions regarding your particular situation.

Risks
Risks of complications are quite low but do exist. These include infection and shifting of the implant in the calf.

The New You!
After surgery has been completed and the side effects have diminished, you will be able to enjoy shapelier, stronger-looking calf muscles that complement your legs and the rest of your body.

Insurance
Most health insurance plans do not cover cosmetic procedures. In some instances, if you attempt to secure insurance reimbursement for cosmetic procedures, your insurance company may view it as fraud.

Costs
Your Patient Coordinator will provide you with a detailed, written estimate of fees for your procedure when you have your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery. Your "Estimate of Surgical Fees" will include: implants, surgeon's fee, operating room and the anesthesiologist's fee.
